Alaska - Day 3- June 30, 2011

We got off to an early morning start.  Alarm went off at 5:45, coffee at 6:10 in a to-go cup, and we were off.  What a morning it was....clear blue sky with sun, sun, sun!  We had an unbelievable time with the Mom and two cubs followed by a clamming tide with the mom and three cubs, followed by the Mom and two cubs playing in the sea!!  WOW!

In the middle of all that we said goodbye to our Swiss friends and to Ed and Nancy from Anchorage.  We really enjoyed our time with both couples!

Time for lunch at 1.  After 6 hours of standing and shooting we were all a bit tired, so we called a halt until 3.  In the interval we recharged our batteries, camera batteries, and downloaded our full 32 G cards!

At 3 PM, we were on the hunt again.  Now with a German couple.  This time we encountered the Mom and one fun cub.  This cub is a first year and she loves to play.  She can entertain herself for hours.  She elected go pose for us!  Cheri decided that this little one might be here favorite bear, closely followed by the blond twins!

Alas the weather seems to be changing.  There is now a very stiff breeze and the clouds look very different.  So we are bracing for what comes our way.  Dinner is at 7 tonight instead of 6:30...so not sure if we will get a final ride tonight or not.

Got the ride, but not tons going on.

Enjoy!

Alaska - Day 2- June 29, 2011

Another perfect day!  We couldn't believe our eyes as we awoke and there was still some blue in the sky, oh my!  fingers crossed...another great day was about to start.

We hopped in the chariot with Dave our guide and Ruth and Karl our Swiss friends...and off we went.  It was a clamming tide and so the bears were on the beach and digging razor clams.  Mom's were showing their cubs the magic tricks to find, open and then eat them.  The bears have special feeling in their paws to detect the razor clams movements under the sand.  We shot and shot.  As we were shooting, planes were arriving.

When we got back we were joined by two others.

More great food, more great shots and more sunshine!  Another perfect day in Silver Salmon Creek!

Enjoy!

Mom looking serious

Well we could not have asked for a finer way to start the adventure.  We showed up at the Lake Hood airport right on time, got weighed in with all of our gear and we were off.  We had originally thought it was a float plane ride, but we took off on a runway.  The pilot informed us that flying time would be about an hour.

We had low expectations because all weather forecasts were for rain, in fact for rain all week.....but in Warren's world, one never knows what may happen.  It wasn't raining in Anchorage, so that was a start.  We met up with 2 others who were headed to Silver Salmon Creek Lodge too.  Ruth and Karl from Switzerland.  We'd later find out they are magic too!!

As the flight progressed we were more and more amazed...no rain!  Not only no rain, but sun!  We all snapped away at the magnificent scenery as it went by...glaciers, mountains, waterfalls.

As we began to circle for the landing we began go see bears!!  Then as we were getting closer and closer to the water and wondering where on earth we were landing without pontoons....we landed on the beach!  We jumped out and shot our first bear!  What a welcome!

Dave, our guide, grabbed the gear and we were off to get settled  in, get our bear brief and then we would be out.  We we given 'Halibut Hut'... Fabulous one room cabin.  Silver Salmon Creek Lodge is all it says it is and MORE!!  The staff, the food, the accommodations and of course the bears are the REAL DEAL!!!  We loved every minute of our time at the lodge.

Our first bear encounter was a mother with two 2-year old cubs.  Oh what fun it was to watch them in action.  Seems that the twins think the best thing on earth is playing with one another, closely followed by sipping mothers milk!  Yes - they eat grass, but once in a while they still get a taste of the sweet stuff.  And we were lucky enough to get a chance to see them get a taste!

We came back for tasty lunch and before we knew it, it was time to go out again.  The afternoon started a bit slow,  but then we encountered a bear near the river and we were able to spend about an hour with it.  It walked around, swam, hung out near a bear sign and generally gave us a great show.  The sun is completely out as I write this blog; a very rare occurrence here!

Both John and Cheri filled their 32G cards and so we are back at camp, downloading and awaiting dinner.  That's around 1,000 pictures each!

Dinner was delicious- a theme that would repeat!  Then as soon as we were done...zoom..off we went again. This time we we treated to a bear on the beach - up close and personal!  Then it was the Mom with her twin two year old's!  What a time we had shooting them for over an hour in the magic sunlight golden hour!

Then we fell into bed and fast asleep.

Enjoy!

Plum Island and Whites Pond - June 4, 2011

Cat Bird

Hi Everyone-
Back to the great outdoors!  We decided to visit Plum Island and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.  This is an easy spot to get to and you can drive along looking for birds.  As long as you stay in your car, they go about their business.  There were many Kildeers, King birds, Boblinks, Cat birds, terns, egrets, male and female turkeys, warblers of many descriptions, one scarlet tanager, one osprey, Canada geese and more!

And of course, we had to stop at Whites Pond on the way home!  We met up with Peter Alden who had a bird club with him.  He's always fun to talk with!  The Pileated Woodpecker babies were still in the nest although they look like they might fly soon!  We were lucky enough to see the parents feed them twice.  The heron

It was a very windy day, but we had some good bird opportunities never-the-less.  Here are a few of our favorite shots from the day!
