Monday September 12 – Canmore to Banff and back

Thanks to Teresa Burke, we had our work out videos, and like good doobies we worked out that first morning. The morning was a slowed down one that we all needed and as we got started, we made the Chicken Verde to be eaten another night.  We also sautéed up all the ingredients we needed for the continuing cazeula breakfast mix ingredients - see recipe.

First day in Canmore and Banff!  A gorgeous sunny day!!!  Off to Banff we went.  We stopped in town and got oriented in the cute Town of Banff.

We were so glad Paul declared the Monday was gondola day and we booked the Gondola ride on Sulphur Mt.  At the top of the gondola, there was a gorgeous boardwalk that went to the top of the mountain where cosmic ray research had been done.  It was at 7500 ft and so we all took some time to acclimatize to the high elevation.  Dottie had blue lips and was running out of oxygen. John walked her through breathing exercises. She came around, got grounded and enjoyed the walk that she had been afraid of doing. It was so wonderful to be on top of the mountain after it had snowed the previous day.  There was snow in the trees and on the ground.  Snowballs were made 😊.  When we reached nearly the top, we were graced by a pika sighting!  Go little animal!

We got out first views of the aquamarine waters that the Canadian Rockies are so famous for.  We speculated on the reason why they were that color, but ended up with confirmation later in the trip.

After the gondola ride, we drove around Lake Minnewanka.  We saw an elk from a distance, then got photos of one right next to the road. She walked right in front of the car and Dottie scored her first close up animal photo!

We stopped at liquor store in Canmore for Grizzly Paw, a locally brewed beer ( grumpy bear honey wheat  turned out to be our favorite) and  wine. In town a four pack cost $14c

We ate at home: grilled steak w mushrooms and caramelized onions, baked potatoes w sour cream, scrumptious salad.
