Thursday September 15 – Canmore to Jasper

We left our condo in Canmore headed toward Jasper around 10am. It was 50 degrees. Now at 1:30 near the Saskatchewan transverse, its 70 degrees.

We enjoyed the wonderful standard sandwiches: turkey, pickles and cheese sandwiches at Bow Lake Lodge. A bunch of kiwis crashed our party at red picnic tables overlooking the glacier and waterfalls in the far distance. Cheri found some yummy maple shortbread cookies and we all enjoyed the sweet treat.

We leisurely made our way up the Icefields Parkway with yellow aspens whispering in the slight breeze. We had the pleasure of transiting through this incredible region at the peak of the autumn leaf change.  The Aspens all getting the signal though connected roots to change color and the evergreens assisting in the riot of color by darkening their green for maximum contrast.

We stopped at the Columbia Ice Field and hiked up to see the edge of it since the sun as shining brightly and we needed to stretch our legs along the way.

Mountain goats, within touching distance if we were the kind of tourists who did that. There were 6 or seven in the herd right near the road. This was the first time John and Cheri had ever experienced them so close!!

We went a little further, high from seeing the mountain goats and before we knew it, Cheri yelled Bear!!  There was a black bear on the side of the road eating berries!  Oh what fun we had watching her eat as she stocked up for winter.

As we made our way into Jasper proper, there was a massive Elk on the side of the road.  We finally made our way to Jasper Best Western.

We had an amazing dinner at Raven Bistro. Luckily, Paul was wearing his new LL Bean no wrinkle khakis with water repellent finish-- our cute, Kiwi waitress spilt a tall glass of beer from her full tray right onto Paul and a little on Dottie and John.  Luckily, Paul had on his beer repellant pants and so it just rolled off.
